Byte
Byte was one of the most influential and respected computing magazines of the 20th century, widely regarded as a cornerstone of the personal computer revolution. Launched in September 1975 by Carl Helmers and later acquired by McGraw-Hill, Byte quickly became the definitive magazine for technical computing enthusiasts, engineers, and early adopters.
Unlike many other publications of the time that focused on consumer or gaming aspects, Byte delivered deeply technical and in-depth articles that covered both hardware and software. It explored a wide array of platforms—from early microcomputers like the Altair 8800 and Apple II, to later IBM PCs, Amigas, Macs, and UNIX workstations. Topics included processor architecture, operating systems, programming languages (especially assembly, C, and Pascal), networking, electronics design, artificial intelligence, and emerging technologies.
Each issue featured hands-on projects, product reviews, in-depth technical explanations, schematics, and source code listings. Contributors included industry pioneers and academics, and the magazine’s editorial integrity and technical depth made it a must-read for serious computer users throughout the 1980s and early 1990s.
Byte remained in print until 1998 and later had a short-lived online revival. Its legacy endures in digital archives and in the collective memory of a generation of developers and hobbyists who grew up learning from its pages.
