VIDEOTEL magazine

VIDEOTEL Magazine was an Italian publication dedicated to promoting and supporting the use of the Videotel service, Italy’s version of videotex technology developed by SIP (now TIM) during the 1980s. The magazine served as both a user guide and promotional vehicle for this early online service, which allowed Italians to access interactive content—such as news, weather, banking, travel reservations, and email—through telephone lines and Minitel-style terminals or compatible home computers with modems.

Each issue of VIDEOTEL Magazine provided updates on available services, highlighted new content providers, and offered tutorials on navigating the Videotel interface. It also published user tips, technical support information, and configuration guides for connecting various computers—such as the Olivetti M24, Commodore 64, and MSX systems—to the network. Some editions even showcased interviews with developers and coverage of business applications for the platform.

The magazine was both educational and promotional, aiming to expand the user base by demonstrating Videotel’s potential as an information hub long before the internet became widespread. While the service ultimately faded in the 1990s, VIDEOTEL Magazine played a pivotal role in introducing thousands of Italians to digital interactivity, making it a key chapter in the country’s early telematic and online communication history.
