The Canon V-20JP, introduced in 1984, was Canon’s flagship MSX1 home computer tailored for the Japanese market. It featured a Z80A-compatible NEC D780C-1 processor running at 3.58 MHz, 64 KB of RAM, and 16 KB of video RAM. The graphics were managed by the Texas Instruments TMS9918ANL video display processor, supporting a resolution of 256×192 pixels with 16 colors. Audio capabilities were provided by the YM2149 Programmable Sound Generator, offering three-channel sound.
The V-20JP's black casing distinguished it from the earlier white-cased V-10 model. It included two cartridge slots, composite and RF video outputs, a Centronics-compatible parallel printer port, and connectors for joysticks and cassette recorders. A unique feature was its compatibility with Canon's T90 SLR camera through the DMB-90 (Data Memory Back 90) interface, allowing photographers to transfer shooting data directly to the computer for archiving or processing.
Priced at ¥64,800 in Japan, the V-20JP was also released in Europe with localized versions, such as the V-20 (EU) and V-20 (FR), featuring region-specific keyboard layouts and video standards. The Canon V-20JP remains a distinctive example of early 1980s home computing and Canon's innovative approach to integrating computing with photography.
